Few pictures on this board are tied to a single Detroit ballplayer, and this 1912 view of Paddy Baumann is identified by its caption as a Detroit baseball subject. The image comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers across the country, so it was made to be published quickly and reproduced widely. Its glass negative shows how the sports pages of the early 1910s turned local players into recognizable faces. The title was reconstructed by baseball historians in 2006, so the caption reflects later research as well as the original notes.
