This picture is a group study of four Detroit Tigers players, Deacon McGuire, Donie Bush, Bobby Veach, and Del Gainor, taken in 1913. The caption cards spell the veteran catcher's name "McQuire," and the title follows later research by the Society for American Baseball Research. The Bain News Service, a New York firm that supplied news photographs to newspapers, made the glass negative, so the portrait reflects the quick, practical style of pre-World War I press photography. It is a useful glimpse of a Detroit club in the years before the team's championship era, when its roster mixed veterans and younger players.
