Outfielder Sam Crawford, nicknamed "Wahoo Sam" after his Nebraska hometown of Wahoo, appears here during his years with the Detroit Tigers, when he was one of the American League's most dangerous hitters. The picture is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news and sports photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Crawford played much of his Detroit career alongside Ty Cobb, and the two helped make the Tigers a regular contender. The 1913 date comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research, not from the original caption.
