Sam Crawford, nicknamed "Wahoo Sam," is the subject of this 1909 portrait, taken during his years as a Detroit Tigers outfielder. The photograph is dated October 8, 1909, the same autumn Detroit met the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series. Crawford played in Detroit from 1903 to 1917 and still holds the major league career record for triples, with 312. The picture came from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose images of athletes and public figures are now held by the Library of Congress.
