A portrait of Raymond "Red" McKee, the Detroit American League ballplayer, this glass negative shows a player whose name is more familiar to baseball historians than to most fans today. Detroit's club was a powerhouse in the years before World War I, and it was managed by Hughie Jennings during that stretch. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers and magazines with pictures, produced many such studio and team portraits, and its negatives were usually made to be reproduced in print. The date of about 1913 comes from later research, so it is an estimate rather than a firm record.
