The Boston Athenaeum, a members' library and art gallery founded in 1807, is the subject here, and its record gives no date for the photograph. The institution has long held a famous collection of portraits, including the unfinished Gilbert Stuart likeness of George Washington, which made its reading rooms and galleries a destination for visitors. Its Beacon Street building, completed in 1849, is a fine example of mid-nineteenth-century Boston architecture, and images like this one help record how the institution and its neighborhood looked over time. Because the caption card is undated, the exact moment of the exposure remains unknown.
