Few sights in New York Harbor were more familiar by 1900 than the Statue of Liberty, which stood on what was then called Bedloe's Island after its dedication in October 1886. France gave the statue to the United States, sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed its copper skin, and Gustave Eiffel's firm engineered the iron framework inside. The caption card carries a U.S. Copyright Office deposit number, which suggests the picture was submitted for copyright registration, though the other details on the card are unverified. Worth noticing is how recently the statue had become a fixture of the harbor skyline, still taking on the meaning it would hold for arriving immigrants.
