The conservatory at the White House was a glass greenhouse added to the executive mansion's grounds to grow plants and flowers for the household and for state occasions, and this cyanotype, a blueprint-style print from the late 1880s to early 1900s, captures that specific structure rather than the mansion itself. Cyanotypes were an inexpensive, light-sensitive process that produced distinctive blue-and-white images, and they were used for documentary and architectural recording at the time. The White House conservatory was later removed during the expansion of the West Wing and related work in the early twentieth century, so this print preserves a glimpse of a feature that no longer stands.
