Few visitors would expect a glasshouse at the executive mansion, but this stereograph shows the White House conservatory, a set of glass-roofed plant houses where gardeners grew flowers and plants for the residence. Published by T.W. Ingersoll of St. Paul, Minnesota, around 1897, the card was made for a stereoscope, which fused its two nearly identical photographs into one image with apparent depth. Such cards were a popular way for Americans far from Washington to see the capital's landmarks at home. The grounds changed considerably in the early 1900s, so this view records an arrangement that no longer exists.
