Glass-roofed greenhouses on the grounds of the Executive Mansion supplied plants for the house, and this 1889 view shows the conservatory that stood against the building's side. Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the first professional women photographers in Washington, made the image during the years when she recorded the city's public buildings and the people who worked in them. The conservatory was built in the 1850s and was torn down in 1902, when the mansion was enlarged and the West Wing was added, so the photograph preserves a feature of the house that no longer exists.
