Most views of the White House from this period show the exterior, so this 1889 interior of the conservatory stands out for its close look at the plants and glasswork. The glass-and-iron greenhouse on the grounds supplied flowers and foliage for the mansion's rooms and receptions, a practice common in 19th-century executive households. Its humid, filtered light made it a place to grow tropical ferns and palms, and photographs like this one show how the Victorian taste for indoor plants shaped the presidential residence. The conservatory was later removed in the early 1900s, when the grounds were reworked.
