The slogan "Where the Americas meet" sets this silkscreen poster apart from other island views, presenting Puerto Rico as a crossroads between North and South America and the Caribbean. Printed in 1936 under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, it was one of many posters meant to draw visitors to places the New Deal government hoped would boost local economies. Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory since 1898, was promoted to mainland Americans as a reachable destination with a distinct Spanish-speaking culture. A 1940 date stamp on the back shows that such posters often stayed in circulation for years after they were first made.
