Frederic P. Ott, an employee at Thomas Edison's laboratory, is caught mid-sneeze in this print, one of the best-known early motion studies. It was taken from a roughly five-second film shot in early January 1894 in Edison's Black Maria studio, and it was produced for publicity, as a series of stills to accompany a Harper's Weekly article on the new moving pictures. W.K.L. Dickson, who did much of the experimental film work at Edison's laboratory, registered the image for copyright from Orange, New Jersey, that same month. The sequence shows how quickly the new camera could freeze a fleeting gesture.
