The flight deck of Columbia, the first orbiter to fly, is the focus here, showing the crew's control station from the pilot's and commander's seats forward toward the windows. Columbia flew its maiden mission in April 1981, and this photograph dates to the early years of the shuttle program, when NASA was still refining how crews worked in the cramped cockpit. The orbiter's glass-fronted displays and rows of switches reflect a design meant to be flown by a pilot and a commander with a mission specialist behind them, a layout that carried over to later vehicles. Color images like this one were among the most widely circulated pictures of the shuttle era.
