This color photograph captures Apollo 17 lifting off from Florida at night, its Saturn V rocket lighting the dark launch area. The launch took place in December 1972 and carried Eugene Cernan, Ronald Evans and Harrison Schmitt on the last crewed mission to the Moon. The nighttime setting gives the flame and exhaust an intensity that daytime launches rarely show, and the picture stands as a record of the final chapter of the Apollo program.
