Sarah Bernhardt is the figure at the center of this sheet, and the play is Alfred de Musset's 1834 drama *Lorenzaccio*, which she performed in the title role. The design is by Alphonse Mucha, the Czech-born artist who had become Paris's best-known poster designer after his earlier work for Bernhardt. Printed in color by F. Champenois in 1896, it shows Mucha's signature style: a tall, narrow format, a stately figure framed by decorative borders, and a restrained palette that keeps the actress the clear focus for passersby on the street.
