This drawing stands out for its subject: a drawbridge in Tokyo, shown alongside foreign visitors, a pairing the catalog records for the years 1850 to 1900. That window covers the decades after Japan reopened its ports to Western trade in the 1850s and the Meiji period that followed, when Edo became Tokyo and foreigners became a more familiar sight in the capital. The catalog also credits the work to Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period artist known for woodblock prints, and gives a date of 1750, which predates his active years. That mismatch is worth keeping in mind when judging the piece's age.
