A drawbridge and the foreign visitors who came to see it set this drawing apart, placing it in Tokyo during the late Edo and early Meiji years. The record credits the work to Isoda Koryūsai, a ukiyo-e artist active in Edo between 1764 and 1788, so the stated date of 1750 does not fit his career and should be treated as uncertain. After Japan opened to foreign trade under the treaties of 1854, Western travelers flocked to the capital, and images like this one show how they saw its bridges and waterways. The drawing is a useful record of that moment of contact between an older Japanese artistic tradition and new outside visitors.
