Mariposa Grove, on the southern edge of Yosemite National Park, is home to some of the largest giant sequoias in the world, and the road that carried visitors into it became a story of its own. Early travelers reached the grove on foot, on horseback, or by stagecoach, and the rough tracks that climbed toward it were improved over the decades as tourism grew. Pictures of these roads often show how the approach to the trees was as much a part of the experience as the trees themselves. Look for the narrow grade, the wagons or automobiles, and the way the roadway winds through the forest toward the giant trunks.
