Few trees in California drew as many visitors as the Wawona tree, a giant sequoia in Mariposa Grove that was tunneled through in 1881 so that wagons and coaches could pass. This stereograph card, dated around 1918, shows the landmark with automobiles, a sign of how motor travel was changing visits to the park. Keystone View Company issued cards like this one in large numbers, letting viewers at home feel they were standing in the grove. The tree fell in 1969, which makes these views a record of a landmark that no longer stands.
