The Hutchings House, described in its record as the first in Yosemite Valley, was built around a cedar tree about 8 feet tall, so the tree became part of the room itself. James Hutchings, an early settler and promoter of the valley, ran the house as a home and lodging for visitors who came to see its waterfalls and granite cliffs. Underwood & Underwood of New York issued this stereo card around 1902, when stereographs were a popular parlor entertainment, and the domestic scene gives a glimpse of how the valley's pioneer families and tourist hosts lived indoors.
