Here the camera looks toward the twin granite faces of North Dome and Half Dome's neighbor to the south, seen from the meadow near the Hutchings property on the valley floor. Stereoviews like this one were sold in great numbers in the late nineteenth century, when the Yosemite Valley was becoming a destination for travelers from across the country who wanted to see its waterfalls and sheer cliffs without leaving their parlors. Pairs of photographs viewed through a stereoscope gave the rock walls a striking sense of depth, which helped make the valley's scale feel real to viewers who would never make the trip themselves.
