Looking across Yosemite Valley from the Hutchings' vantage point, North Dome rises roughly 3,725 feet above the floor, a rounded granite face that reads as a quiet counterweight to the cliffs of El Capitan and Half Dome. Stereoviews like this one were a major way Americans of the late 1800s encountered the valley, sold in pairs and viewed through a hand-held stereoscope that made the distant dome seem to hover in three dimensions. Hutchings' establishment in the valley helped draw early tourists, and the scene captures the tidy, carefully composed landscape that shaped how Yosemite was imagined and promoted to a national audience.
