This stereograph shows the Yosemite Valley from a viewpoint near its lower end, where the valley floor opens out between granite walls. It belongs to the Watkins New Series of Pacific Coast Views, issued in 1879 under the publisher William I. Marshall. Like other cards of the period, it was made as a pair of slightly offset images that, viewed through a stereoscope, merge into a single three-dimensional scene. Photographs such as this helped introduce the valley's cliffs and meadows to eastern audiences during the years before Yosemite became a national park in 1890.
