Few trees in the Sierra Nevada were as famous as the Wawona tree, a giant sequoia in Mariposa Grove with a passage cut through its base so stagecoaches could drive straight through. The opening was made in 1881, and for decades tourists came to watch horses and carriages pass beneath the trunk. This stereograph was issued by the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, a firm that sold card views to home viewers around the turn of the century. The card reflects how visitors of the period saw the tree as a roadside attraction as much as a natural wonder.
