Yosemite Falls, the tallest waterfall in North America, is the subject here, shown in Mariposa County, California, where the valley and its cascades sit within the park's boundaries. The print is attributed on its shelflist card to Kuchel & Dresel, a San Francisco firm that produced landscape views of the Sierra Nevada during the late nineteenth century, when the valley was drawing growing numbers of visitors. Such views helped shape the public image of Yosemite as a national treasure, and the falls, with their dramatic drop from the rim, were a favorite subject for photographers and engravers of the period.
