Yosemite's early road network passed through a series of entrance stations, small wooden or stone gatehouses where visitors paid fees and were logged before entering the valley. Pictures of these stations show the modest architecture that greeted travelers as the park's roads opened to automobiles in the early twentieth century. The gates marked the transition from rough wagon tracks to a managed park, and they remain a useful record of how access to Yosemite was organized.
