Yosemite's roads were once the chief obstacle between the valley and the outside world, and a picture titled simply "Yosemite Roads" points to that long struggle over access. Before the early twentieth century, visitors reached the valley by rough wagon tracks and stagecoach routes that climbed steep granite grades, and improving these roads was a central concern for the park's managers. Paved and widened routes gradually opened the valley to automobiles, which changed who could visit and how long they stayed. The road itself, winding past cliffs and meadows, is often what a viewer notices first.
