Geneva in 1909 drew much of its income from watchmaking, jewelry, and precision instrument trades, many of them carried on in small workshops in the old town and the Pâquis district. The Rhône leaves Lake Geneva here on its way toward France, and its bridges linked the old quarter with newer districts spreading along both banks. The city was also known internationally as the home of the Red Cross, founded there in 1863, and it kept the Protestant character shaped by Calvin's Reformation. Travelers arriving by rail and lake steamer came for the water, the hotels lining the shore, and on clear days the view of Mont Blanc to the southeast.
