Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, in 1910 was best known as a summer resort for Chicago families, who reached it by rail and stayed in large lakeside hotels and rented cottages. The town's economy leaned on that seasonal trade, along with boating, fishing, and the ice cut from the lake in winter. Seen from the hill at Williams Bay, the lake and its shoreline would have looked much as they did to the summer visitors who came there for the air and the views. The observatory on that rise belonged to the University of Chicago and housed the Yerkes refractor, then the largest telescope of its kind in the world. Local residents would have known the spot for both its astronomers and its lakeside pleasures.
