Crystal Lake, Wisconsin, in 1913 sat within a state whose economy was shifting from the logging that had built its northern towns toward dairy farming, cheese making, and manufacturing in cities such as Milwaukee. Lakes in the northern counties were drawing summer visitors from Chicago and Milwaukee by rail, so small resort cottages and boathouses were becoming a familiar part of the landscape. Wisconsin's politics in these years were shaped by the Progressive movement, and Governor Francis McGovern was serving his term when this photograph was taken. Residents of a lake community like this one would have known it mainly for its water, its summer people, and the slow change from lumber camps to farms and recreation. Because the records for this particular lake are thin, the details of its own daily life in 1913 are harder to recover than the broader trends of the state.
