Madison, Wisconsin, in 1913 was a state capital of modest size, its economy resting on state government, the University of Wisconsin, and the dairy farms of the surrounding countryside. Construction of a new state Capitol was underway after the old building burned in 1904, a visible sign of the city's civic ambitions. This panoramic photograph records a football game between Purdue and Wisconsin that ended 7 to 7, as the title notes. College football drew large crowds from town and campus alike in those years, and the university's teams were a source of local pride.
