Lake Geneva, or Lac Léman, sits on the border between Switzerland and France, and in 1909 its shores were a mix of lakeside resorts, vineyards, and growing towns. Geneva at the lake's western tip was a center of watchmaking, banking, and the international diplomacy that had made the city a home for the League of Nations' predecessors and many foreign visitors. Steamers operated by the lake's navigation company carried passengers between towns such as Montreux, Vevey, and Lausanne, and the railway along the northern shore had long linked the region to Paris and Italy. Tourists in that era came for the mild climate, the mountain views, and the spa and hotel life that had drawn English and German visitors since the previous century.
