Lake Lucerne, or Vierwaldstättersee, sits in central Switzerland, where the cantons of Lucerne, Schwyz, Uri, Unterwalden and Nidwalden meet around its irregular shoreline. In 1910 the lake was already a major destination for travelers arriving by steamboat and rail, and the Swiss tourist trade had grown steadily since the mid-nineteenth century. Lucerne town at the northwestern end handled much of that traffic, with hotels along the quays and the Gotthard rail line linking the region to Italy. Many visitors came to see the Rigi and Pilatus mountains, which were reached by cog railways, and the lake's scenery drew artists and writers from across Europe and North America.
