St. George, Bermuda, as seen from St. David's Light in 1911, sat at the eastern end of the Bermuda chain, a town that had been the colony's first capital after its founding in 1612. By the early twentieth century its economy leaned heavily on the winter tourist trade, with steamships from New York and Boston bringing visitors to the islands' hotels, and on the Royal Naval dockyard at nearby Ireland Island. St. George's harbor and its narrow streets of limestone and stucco houses reflected centuries of British administration, and the town was known to residents as the old seat of government, even as Hamilton had since 1793 held the colonial capital. The lighthouse at St. David's Head, guarding the reefs at the island's eastern tip, was one of the landmarks that kept the approaches safe for these passenger and cargo vessels.
