Hamilton, the capital of Bermuda, was in 1911 the seat of the colonial government, a role it had held since 1815, when the House of Assembly and the administration moved there from St. George's. The town's economy leaned on visitors arriving by steamship from New York and on exports of Bermuda onions and early potatoes to American markets. Front Street, along the harbor, was the commercial heart, where merchants, shipping agents and government offices stood close to the water. Seen from the Cathedral, the rooftops and harbor below show a small capital that islanders knew as the place where politics, trade and the tourist trade met.
