Flatts Village, on the shore of Harrington Sound in Smith's Parish, Bermuda, was a small waterfront community in 1911, when the island's economy leaned heavily on winter visitors arriving by steamship from New York and on exports of Easter lilies and early vegetables grown on the farms of the interior. Bermuda was a British colony governed by an appointed governor and an elected House of Assembly, and most islanders lived in small parishes like this one, where fishing, boatbuilding, and farming were the common ways of making a living. Harrington Sound, a large tidal lagoon linked to the open Atlantic, was prized by residents for its calm water and by visitors for boating and fishing. Taken together, the view captures a place that was quiet and rural by the standards of the port towns, yet already tied to the steamship trade that brought tourists and mail to the islands.
