Constantinople in 1876 was the capital of the Ottoman Empire, and its waterfront on the Golden Horn and the Bosporus handled much of the empire's trade between Europe and Asia. The year was one of political upheaval: Sultan Abdulaziz was deposed in May, his successor Murad V was removed in August, and Abdul Hamid II took the throne. By December a constitution had been proclaimed, and a conference of European powers met in the city over the empire's troubles in the Balkans, where a revolt in Bulgaria had been brutally put down earlier that year. Residents of Stamboul, Galata and Pera, a mix of Turks, Greeks, Armenians, Jews and Levantines, knew the city as a crossroads of faiths and languages, with mosques and minarets rising above the water.
