Constantinople in 1890 was still the seat of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, who had moved much of his court life to the Yıldız Palace on a hill above the Bosporus, while the older Dolmabahçe Palace stood on the shore below. The city's commerce ran along the strait and the Golden Horn, where steamers, sailing craft and small rowboats crowded the quays, and the Galata Bridge carried a steady flow of pedestrians and carts across the inlet. The Tünel funicular, opened in 1875 to climb the steep slope from Karaköy, showed how the capital was modernizing even as its skyline stayed dominated by domes and minarets. Residents marked their days by the call to prayer from many mosques, and travelers arriving by the Orient Express from Europe saw that skyline first from the water.
