José Antonio Primo de Rivera, founder of the Falange and son of the former dictator Miguel Primo de Rivera, is the subject of this color lithograph, printed in Tolosa, a town in the Basque province of Gipuzkoa. Republican authorities executed him in Alicante in November 1936, and his death quickly made him a central symbol for the Nationalist side. The poster was printed by the Tolosa firm Laborde y Labayen sometime between 1936 and 1939, during the early years of the war, when portraits of party leaders were widely used for propaganda. Its identification rests on a reference in the Carteles de la República catalog.
