The title of this silkscreen poster, *The Sun Rises in the West*, suggests a play about looking for a fresh start farther away. It was printed under the Federal Art Project in California between 1936 and 1941, when the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl had emptied farms across the Plains and sent many families west. The subjects in its record, abandoned farms and internal migration, tie the production to that exodus. Silkscreen posters like this one were a major output of New Deal arts programs, prized for their bold flat color and low-cost reproduction.
