The poster's headline, "The curtain rises," sets the tone for a 1936 silkscreen that promotes both contemporary plays and books under the banner of the Current theater. It was produced under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which employed artists during the Depression to make public posters for theaters, libraries, and community events. Silkscreen was a practical method for that work because it allowed flat, bold color areas and multiple copies from one set of stencils. A date stamp on the back, January 8, 1942, shows the sheet was handled and filed several years after it was printed.
