Few WPA posters ask the viewer to take up a habit as plainly as this one does: in March, read the books you have always meant to read. Made in 1936 as a silkscreen color print on board, it is one of many Federal Art Project posters promoting libraries and reading, and its subject here is specifically Illinois. The silkscreen process allowed artists to print bold, flat areas of color cheaply in large runs, which suited public campaigns like this one. A date stamp on the back reads March 25, 1941, suggesting this copy stayed in use years after it was first designed.
