The map follows the Detroit, Grand Haven & Milwaukee Railway, whose line ran from Detroit to the Lake Michigan shore at Grand Haven and connected across the lake to Milwaukee. Poole Brothers, a Chicago firm that engraved and printed railroad maps and promotional posters in the late 1800s, signed the piece as its map engraver. The record dates it only tentatively to the late 1880s or early 1890s, so those dates and other details come from an old caption card and are worth checking against other sources. The railroad was later absorbed into the Grand Trunk system, which makes this a useful snapshot of a line before it changed hands.
