St. James Episcopal Church in Atlantic City, New Jersey, is the subject of this 8-by-10-inch glass negative, made sometime between 1900 and 1910. That was a period of fast growth for the resort city, when hotels and the boardwalk drew large numbers of visitors and the church served an Anglican congregation in a community expanding around it. The Detroit Publishing Company, based in Michigan, produced views like this one for travel promoters and the general public, so the image shows how the East Coast resort trade was being presented to tourists. The negative came to the collection as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
