Few pictures in this collection capture a seaside pastime as directly as this one: a sand sculpture at Atlantic City, New Jersey, whose maker has carved a line of scripture and a request into the sand beside the work. The inscription reads "Into Thy hands O Lord I commend my spirit" and asks viewers to "kindly remember the worker," and a second note identifies the piece as the winner of a sand modelling contest. Sand sculpture was a popular attraction on the Atlantic City beaches in the early twentieth century, when the resort drew large crowds of day visitors and vacationers. The glass-plate negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers sold postcard views of such scenes nationwide.
