Atlantic Avenue in Atlantic City, New Jersey, is the subject here, shown in a c1908 glass-plate negative with a "Guaranty Trust Company" sign visible at the left edge, a detail that anchors the scene to a working downtown block rather than the beachfront. The Detroit Publishing Company made this view as part of a large effort to document American towns and streets in color-rich promotional and archival prints in the early twentieth century. Atlantic Avenue was the city's main commercial thoroughfare, running parallel to the boardwalk, and its storefronts and banks reflected the resort's growth as a destination for visitors arriving by rail. The negative was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado and entered the Library of Congress collection in 1949.
