Atlantic Avenue in Atlantic City was the town's principal commercial thoroughfare, running parallel to the Boardwalk and lined with shops, hotels and businesses that served the resort's steady stream of visitors. This view, made on an 8 x 10 inch glass negative between roughly 1900 and 1910, belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American towns and scenery for sale as postcards and prints. Atlantic City was then at the height of its rise as a seaside destination reached by rail from Philadelphia and New York, and street scenes like this one capture the busy, crowded character of its commercial district during that boom.
