In 1916 Montgomery was a city of well over 30,000 people, and its streets reflected both the state government on Goat Hill and the commercial life that grew up around the Alabama River. Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, completed in 1883, stood among the congregations that drew steady Sunday crowds, while the Montgomery Advertiser, one of the oldest papers in the state, kept readers informed about local politics and the wider world. That spring, tensions along the Mexican border led to talk of calling up state militia units, and Montgomery residents followed the news closely. Most families still depended on trade, government jobs and the rail connections that tied the city to the farm counties around it.
