Tuskegee Institute, founded in 1881 in Macon County, Alabama, by Booker T. Washington, was by 1916 one of the best-known schools for Black Americans in the country. Under Washington, who had died in 1915, the campus had grown into a self-sustaining community of brick buildings, farms, shops, and teaching facilities, with students learning trades such as carpentry, printing, and agriculture alongside academic subjects. The surrounding Black Belt was a cotton-growing region where most families still worked as tenants or sharecroppers under Jim Crow segregation, so the school's vocational training was closely tied to the economic life of the area. Visitors and students alike knew Tuskegee as a center of Black education and self-help, and the panoramic view captures that campus at the height of its reputation.
